Garfield and Mr T: When Worlds Collide

There may be no greater 1980s icon than Mr. T. His voice, his sneer, his mowhawk and jewelry, his name, his tough guy with a heart of gold persona and of course his ability to player hate on Roddy Piper. He had it all! Thanks to his starring role on The A-Team and his ungodly level of charisma, T had an open door policy in all of pop culture which lead to appearances, cameos, even an album or two! I pity the fool who didn’t lead their life according to Mr T’s Commandments album!

So of course his rise in popularity would also lead to much lampooning. Mr T would become the face of many jokes by comedians, writers, cartoonists, even an SNL sketch here or there, but they all seemed to be in good fun…mainly because Mr T could kill you if he wanted to, I’m sure. But there’s one parody of Mr T that has stuck out in my mind for a while now and thanks to my friend and podcast partner Derek , I was able to get my hands on it. Yup! Mr G!

Ya see back in the mid 80s, when posters at book fairs were all the rage, we’d see no doubt HUNDREDS of wacky Garfield posters flooded our elementary school libraries and eventually our rooms, someone in the creative department somewhere decided that the only thing worse than flying a plane was a Monday. So Mr G was born! Hitting that familiar pose with T’s famous garb, it’s obvious Garfield is not in the mood to feel any pity towards the fool who steals his lasagna.

Also fun side note: when Derek and I attended a horror con last year, a vendor had stacks upon stacks of Garfield posters and we spent a good 10 minutes going through them all to see if this one was there. It wasn’t. So thank goodness for Derek’s kindness and eBay!

Ya know I’m at the age where just owning something because it’s from the 80s doesn’t do it for me like it used to. It has to be special and this is just one of those things I find to be very special. It encapsulates the era of pop culture so well and reminds me of those book fairs glory days! It’s perfect!

Thank you to my friend Derek for this unbelievably fantastic gift!
